CapU remains atop PACWEST standings at 9-1

The Capilano University Blues men’s volleyball team got back to their winning ways this past weekend in Abbotsford, as they secured a pair of wins over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats to remain atop the PACWEST standings at 9-1.

CapU took the first two sets in Thursday’s contest before CBC battled back to extend the match with a 28-26 win in the third set, but Capilano clamped down to close out the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.

Justin Yee powered the offence with 13 kills on the night, while Jacob Hopkins added 11. Jonathan Lee stood out at libero again with 18 digs, and setter Simon Friesen had 10 to go along with his 36 assists and three aces. Capilano played well at the net and recorded 14 blocks on the night, with Mattias Wels-Lopez tallying four and Friesen, Hopkins, and Zarley Zalusky each had three apiece.

The Bearcats responded on Saturday by clawing back in the first set and coming away with a 27-25 win, but the Blues quickly righted the ship after that. After CapU took the second set 25-18, Friesen started the third frame with an incredible 20 straight service points – as the Blues went up 20-0 before winning that set 25-5. They then took the fourth frame 25-19 to close out the weekend sweep.

Five different CapU players had at least five kills in the match, with Yee and Kevin Chiu each recording eight apiece. The Blues again stood tall at the net as well, as four guys had at least two; Wels-Lopez had a team-high of three. Thanks to his service run, Friesen had a season-high six aces on the night, and Lee again led the squad in digs with 15.

Capilano is back at home this weekend when they host the Camosun College Chargers on Friday and Saturday night in the Sportsplex. First serve is at 8:00pm on November 17 and 3:00pm on the 18th.
