With a three-set victory over the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Saturday afternoon, the Capilano Blues finished their 2016-17 season on a winning note and took home the bronze medal at the PACWEST Provincial Championships at Vancouver Island University. It was the third-straight year that CapU has won bronze at the tournament.
After a heartbreaking defeat in five sets on Friday to Douglas College, Capilano rebounded and took command of the match from the get-go. The Blues took the first set 25-18 and then kept it rolling in the second, jumping out to a 5-0 lead over the #4-seeded Avalanche en route to another 25-18 win in the second frame.
The third set was more of the same, as CapU again got out to an early lead and earned yet another 25-18 decision to secure the sweep and finish their season in third place in the PACWEST. Capilano delivered 13 aces in the contest compared to eight errors, and on offence they attacked at a 47 percent rate.
Second-year Tyneille Neufeld, who was named a conference Second Team All-Star earlier in the week, was named Player of the Match. Neufeld had 13 kills in the contest on 68 percent hitting, while also recording nine digs and three aces. Kelsi Boroevich had another effective game from the service line, firing six aces to go along with her team-high 14 digs.
Sarah Hughes, playing in her last game for Capilano, was named to the Tournament All-Star Team for the first time in her storied career.
For fifth-years Hughes, Boroevich, Kira Sutcliffe, and Kolby Richter, it was their last game with the Blues. Hughes, Sutcliffe, and Richter end their PACWEST career with three bronze medals and one silver, while Boroevich won two bronzes and a silver.
