The Capilano University Blues men’s volleyball team remained in the win column on Thursday night, defeating the Columbia Bible College Bearcats 3-1 to improve to 4-0 and secure a mid-week sweep.
CapU travelled to Abbotsford to face CBC on Wednesday, and they came away with a 3-0 victory for their first road win of the season. Rookie outside hitter Markus Bratsberg led the way with 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, while Markiel Simpson had six of Capilano’s 15 aces on the night.
On Thursday the Blues looked poised to cruise to a similar victory, getting out to an early five-point lead in the first set and rolling to a 25-17 win. In the second set they then staved off a late Bearcats rally, pulling ahead after CBC tied it at 19 to claim a 25-22 decision and a two-set lead.
CapU looked to make it a short night in the third, getting out to a 7-0 lead. Yet CBC didn’t go away quietly, making several big blocks and going on a 13-2 run to go up by four. The Blues responded with a run of their own to go up 18-15, but CBC stayed persistent and pulled together down the stretch to continue the match with a 25-22 victory.
The Blues quickly ended any chance of a comeback in the fourth, getting ahead early and maintaining their lead to secure a 25-17 victory that closed out the game.
“Props to CBC, they came out and challenged us, but we’re definitely hungry for more after that one,” said fourth-year Jake Hagen. The Blues now have a big test on the horizon, as they host undefeated Vancouver Island University next weekend in a key early-season series. First serve on Friday, November 2 goes at 8:00pm, and Saturday’s game on the 3rd is at 3:00pm. Both games are in the Centre for Sport and Wellness at CapU (formerly Sportsplex).
