Blues Open Strong But Unable to Handle VIU

Taking the opening set both Friday and Saturday while hosting Vancouver Island University (VIU) was encouraging for the Blues men's volleyball team this past weekend but ultimately the visitors proved resilient and earned a pair of wins.

Fridays results were 22-25, 25-11, 25-18 and 25-18. On Saturday, it went 20-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23.

For the Mariners, Dario de Queiroz-Pereira had 11 kills in both matches and racked up 28 points for the weekend.

On the Blues side of the ledger, left side Rafael Hilario notched 17 kills - including 10 on Saturday - and recorded 17.5 points for the weekend.

Middle blocker James Fong, the 6-foot-7 rookie from Vancouver, established a new season high in kills with eight on Saturday and had 13 for the weekend. He also had a block and assisted on two others.

Australian international Enis Besirevic picked up three solo blocks and assisted on two others while also recording the most productive weekend of his young Blues career. The 6-foot-5 middle blocker notched eight kills for the weekend and accumulated 13 points.

Missing from the Blues lineup against VIU was third-year outside hitter Jacob Hopkins who sustained an injury in practice earlier in the week. Hopkins was one of Capilano's leading point-getters in the team's opening weekend of play against Douglas College.

Next up for the Blues is a Friday-Saturday doubleheader (Nov. 1 and 2) on the road against College of the Rockies. Friday's match is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start while Saturday's match is slated for 3 p.m.

The games will be streamed online at SportsCanada.TV
