Cap falls to COTR in four sets

After a four-set victory by Capilano University Blues on Thursday night, the College of the Rockies Avalanche responded with a four-set win of their own on Friday to earn a series split at the Sportsplex in North Vancouver.

The series finale saw more closely-matched play that featured long rallies and great defensive saves. The Avalanche got out to an early lead in the first frame and took advantage of a couple CapU miscues – taking the first set 25-21.

The Blues responded in the second set, pulling together down the stretch to take a 26-24 decision.

The final two sets were highlighted by many lengthy rallies and back-and-forth play, yet COTR’s ability to win those points proved to be the difference. The Avalanche won the third and fourth sets 25-16 and 25-19, respectively, and took the match 3-1.

Tyneille Neufeld recorded a game-high 17 kills in the match, while Mackenzy Sparks-Guest also reached double-digits with 11. Tracy Ewashkiw led the team in digs with 21 in the contest, while Meghan Koven recorded all four of Cap's blocks in the match.

Capilano is now 3-3 through three weekends of PACWEST play, while COTR improves to 3-1. The Blues get back underway next weekend when they travel to Nanaimo to take on the Vancouver Island Mariners on November 3 and 4.

Blue Notes:

  • In the first edition of the CCAA National Rankings, Capilano comes in at #14.
  • Through three weeks of play, third-year Tyneille Neufeld ranks second in the PACWEST in kills with an average of 3.18 per set, and third-year middle Meghan Koven is second in blocks at 0.76/set.
