Blues soccer star makes professional ultimate roster

After an exciting first-year university soccer experience for the Capilano University Blues which included a PACWEST gold medal and CCAA silver medal, North Vancouver forward, Ty Barbieri will be spending the summer months competing for the Major League Ultimate (MLU) team, the Vancouver Nighthawks.

Barbieri was recently named to the 2016 roster as one of 20 rookies to make up the 30-man squad. The MLU consists of a west coast and east coast division which include four teams per division.

Barbieri has been playing ultimate since Grade 9 when he first joined the ultimate team at Sutherland Secondary. He sees many similarities between the sport he plays for the Blues during the Fall and the one that he will now be travelling the world playing this summer. "They are both highly demanding running sports with similarities such as playing defense, flow of play and the way of working the ball or the disc up the field."

Ty is looking forward to competing against and playing with some of the best ultimate players on the west coast. He has also been selected to represent the U20 Canadian national team at the World Junior Ultimate Championships this summer in Wroclaw, Poland from July 31st to August 6, 2016. The season opener for the Vancouver Nighthawks is set for April 16th at 6 p.m. against the Portland Stags at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium.
