With summer underway and the next PACWEST season already on the horizon, there’s now an opportunity to look back on the year that was 2017-18. Records were broken, medals were won, and CapU student-athletes achieved great success on the provincial and national stage.

The following stats help tell the story of the 2017-18 Capilano University Blues, and provide a chance to reflect on the season’s success and provide inspiration for the year ahead.

389: career assists for Ashley dela Cruz Yip, the most all-time in PACWEST women’s basketball history. The 389 helpers are 72 more than the next-highest total, and it’s a record that appears to be safe for years to come. She broke the previous record of 317 on November 18, 2017 against Vancouver Island University.

4: goals scored in the PACWEST bronze medal game by fifth-year Nicolas Morello, a men’s soccer conference playoff record. Morello was named the tournament’s Top Defender, and he finished his Capilano career with 23 career goals – fifth-most in program history.

13: CapU Blues student-athletes who received the 2017-18 PACWEST Academic Excellence Award. The 13 winners are the most in a year by the Blues since the award’s inception in 1993.

86: Total points in the third set of the PACWEST men’s volleyball match-up between Capilano University and Vancouver Island University on November 3 – a CCAA record. The 44-42 set win for the Blues is also believed to be the fifth highest-scoring set in volleyball history.

3: Player of the Year Awards. Keith Jackson was PACWEST men’s soccer Player of the Year, and Simon Friesen took home top honours for both CCAA and PACWEST men’s volleyball. Friesen became the first Blues athlete to win National Player of the Year since 2009.

22: CCAA All-Canadians throughout the men’s soccer team’s history, the most of any institution in CCAA history. Keith Jackson and Nicolas Morello both received the honour in 2017, as they earned both of the PACWEST’s two spots on the men’s soccer All-Canadian team.

16: PACWEST Athlete of the Week honours. At least one athlete from each team took home the award, with Carmelle M’Bikata of women’s basketball leading the way by winning it three times.

3: Points that Capilano allowed to Camosun in the second quarter of the PACWEST women’s basketball final. The Blues won the game 75-70 to claim PACWEST gold and advance to the CCAA Nationals.

5: CCAA Academic All-Canadians, the second-most of any institution in the PACWEST.

Each of the graduating women’s basketball players took home a Player of the Game honour at the CCAA Nationals in New Brunswick.

126: points scored by the men’s basketball team in a 126-65 win over Columbia Bible College on January 6 – a program record for points in a game. Seven players scored in double-figures in the contest.

2: PACWEST Coaches of the Year: Emmanuel Denguessi for men’s volleyball, and Paul Dailly for men’s soccer.

377: Consecutive minutes that the women’s soccer team went without allowing a goal during the regular season – a span of just over four games. The Blues also didn’t allow a single goal over 210 minutes of play during the PACWEST Championships, where they finished with a silver medal after falling to Douglas in the final in penalties.

8: Tournament All-Stars at both the PACWEST and CCAA Championships, including PACWEST Tournament MVP for M’Bikata and National Tournament All-Star for dela Cruz Yip.
