The Capilano women’s basketball team travelled to Abbotsford and came back with a pair of wins this past weekend, taking down the Columbia Bible College Bearcats on Friday and Saturday night to improve to 6-2 in PACWEST play.

Friday night’s contest went down to the wire, with Capilano coming away with a 68-65 victory. CBC led early on before the Blues came back to lead by five at halftime, and it remained a one-possession game for the majority of the second half.

With CapU ahead by two with under 20 seconds to play, the Bearcats fouled Emma Cunningham to put her on the line – where she sank one of two free throws. CBC raced back down the court and hoisted a potential game-tying three-pointer in the waning seconds, but it was off the mark and Capilano claimed the narrow victory.

Cunningham had a strong all-around game for Cap, tallying 16 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one block. Ashley dela Cruz Yip posted a season-high 10 assists, while rookie Simrat Dosanjh went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc en route to 10 points. Dosanjh currently leads the PACWEST in three-point percentage with a 48.4% mark.

The Blues displayed a much stronger defensive effort on Saturday evening, limiting CBC to 22.4% shooting in a 64-35 victory. CapU jumped out to an early lead and was ahead by 19 at halftime, and carried their strong play into the final two quarters to secure the weekend sweep. The 35 points were the fewest Capilano has allowed all season.

Cunningham again was the top scorer, posting 17 points; across the weekend, she had a 57.1% field goal percentage and a 46.1% mark from beyond the arc. Dela Cruz Yip had eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in under 12 minutes of playing time, and Francis Penafiel had eight points, five boards, three helpers, and two steals. All 11 Blues scored in the contest, and all but two had an assist.

The wins improve Capilano to 6-2 on the season and move them up to second place in the PACWEST standings. The Blues are back at home this weekend to host the third place Vancouver Island University Mariners, with tip-off at 6:00pm on Friday, January 12 and at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 13.
