The Capilano University Blues men’s basketball team fell shy of a medal at the 2018-19 PACWEST Championships, letting a late lead slip away and dropping an 83-68 decision to the Camosun College Chargers in the consolation final.
A hot start propelled CapU to an early 11-point lead, and they were able to maintain their lead up until the fourth quarter, leading 59-52 heading into the final frame. Yet the Blues went cold down the stretch and the Chargers caught fire – going on a 20-3 run to quickly take a double-digit lead and outscoring the Blues 31-9 in the fourth to secure the bronze medal. Camosun shot 14-of-19 from the field over the final 10 minutes, while CapU couldn’t stage a late comeback and went just 3-of-17 down the stretch.
Grady Huskisson was named Player of the Game for Capilano, tallying six points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Fifth-year forward Denver Sparks-Guest had a double-double in his final collegiate game, posting 17 points and 15 boards.
Fourth-year guard Brenden Bailey had 16 points, three steals and two assists in the contest, and was later named a Tournament All-Star. Across the three playoff games he averaged 22.7 points on 49.0% shooting from the floor and a 37.5% mark from beyond the arc.
The Blues finished the regular season 11-7 and reached as high as #7 in the CCAA rankings, and were looking for their first PACWEST medal since winning silver in 2017.
