After a strong opening weekend to the regular season, the Capilano University Blues men’s volleyball team continued their winning ways this past weekend with a pair of straight-sets victories over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.

The series got off to a wild start, with Capilano taking the first set 33-31. The Blues led for the majority of the frame, but a late push and some great saves by the Cascades knotted things up at 24 to extend the set to 31-31 – where the Blues finally took advantage of set point to win the opening game.

CapU found their groove over the remainder of the match, playing sound defense and attacking efficiently at the net to build up comfortable leads to take the second and third sets 25-19 and 25-18, respectively. The Blues hit at a .263 percentage, and setter Simon Friesen recorded 34 assists.

Jacob Hopkins led the way on offence with 14 kills on a .303 percentage, while Justin Yee recorded four aces. Friesen tallied nine digs on the evening, while Yee and Jonathan Lee chipped in with eight apiece.

Saturday night saw another well-rounded performance by the Blues, as they again won 3-0 on solid contributions from up and down the bench. CapU had another strong game at the net, hitting at a .315 rate on offence, and on defense recording seven blocks and forcing several UFV attacking errors. Rookie Trevor Deshane had a big impact at middle, tallying four blocks and firing three kills on three attempts.

Hopkins again led the way in kills with 11 on 19 attempts, while 10 Blues in total recorded at least one kill on the night. Lee had a team-high eight digs, while Zarley Zalusky had a well-rounded game with three aces, one digs, and five kills on five attempts.

Capilano remains undefeated on the young season, having only dropped one set through four matches. They’re back in action on October 26 and 27 when they host the College of the Rockies at the Sportsplex in North Vancouver, with first serve at 8:00pm on both Thursday and Friday.
