Capilano University Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce Dave Dooley as the new head coach of the Blues men’s volleyball team.

Dooley brings a wealth of experience to the position as both a coach and educator. He is currently a head coach with the Seaside Volleyball Club in South Surrey, running their U18 Boys program and beach volleyball program. In 2016 his U16 team didn’t drop a set all season and won a Provincial championship, and in 2017 his beach pairing won Provincial gold (one of the members of that team, Markus Bratsburg, has committed to CapU for the fall).

A native of Surrey, Dooley also has experience coaching at the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence, as well as with Team BC for both indoor and beach volleyball.

“Having been an opponent of the Blues for a number of seasons I've had the opportunity to watch this program develop into a perennial contender under the tutelage of coach Emmanuel Denguessi,” said Dooley. “I'm thrilled to now have the chance to work with this fine group of young men and the Blues program towards the goal of winning a provincial title and competing on the national stage.”

Dooley is familiar with the PACWEST volleyball scene, having spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the University of the Fraser Valley’s women’s volleyball team. He also was an assistant coach for eight seasons with the Camsoun College men’s volleyball team under head coach Charles Parkinson, helping them to three PACWEST championships and one CCAA National title.

A life-long educator, Dooley is currently an Education Services Teacher in Surrey, where he works with at-risk youth. He is a graduate of the University of Victoria, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education.

“I am very pleased to hire Dave Dooley as our new men’s head coach,” said Milt Williams, CapU Manager of Athletics & Recreation. “Having had tremendous coaching mentors to learn from over the years, Dave has become a very talented coach. He is known for his strong work ethic, and like his predecessor he will develop student-athletes to be strong academically and athletically.

“Dave has years of experience coaching PACWEST volleyball and he knows the demands. He has relationships with the current top-level club and provincial team players, and has direct exposure to the next generation of players – which are a few of the many reasons that make Dave a good fit to take charge of the Blues men’s volleyball team.”

Dooley takes over for Emmanuel Denguessi, who has decided to move in a new career direction after three seasons with the Blues. The Blues went 19-5 in 2017-18, but fell in the PACWEST bronze medal match and finished in fourth place.

Capilano has won two CCAA national silver medals and three conference gold medals in the program’s 20-year history.
