In a battle of two of the top 10 teams in the CCAA, the #9 Capilano University Blues men's volleyball team defeated the #3 Douglas College Royals 3-1 on Thursday night in North Vancouver. The victory is the seventh in a row for CapU, and gives them a chance to finish first in the PACWEST with win over the Royals on Saturday.

The Blues held the high-powered Royals to 26 attack errors and a .115 hitting percentage on the night, and their strong passing also forced 23 service errors. CapU had three players hit double-digits in digs led by Justin Yee’s season-high 22, and six different players combined for at least one block, with Zarley Zalusky totaling six.

On the offensive side the Blues had six players record at least four kills, with Yee and Zalusky reaching double-figures with 11 and 10, respectively.

The teams alternated winning the opening two sets, with CapU taking the first 25-19 before Douglas responded with a 25-22 victory to even the match. The pivotal third set saw both sides alternate one-point leads through most of the frame, until CapU went ahead 21-19 and maintained their advantage for a 25-22 win.

The fourth set was all CapU, as they won the first four points and went on a 5-0 run midway through the frame en route to a 25-17 decision that closed out the match.

The win improves Capilano to 18-5 on the year and 3-0 against Douglas this season, keeping them in second place the PACWEST. The two teams will rematch in the regular season finale on Saturday evening in New Westminster, and a win will move the Blues into first place in the conference – giving them the #1 seed at the PACWEST Championships.
