After a seven-week break, the CapU Blues women's basketball team was back to league play as they travelled to Squamish to take on the Quest Kermodes (4-5) on Friday night. The Blues jumped out to an early lead and continued to roll in the second half to secure a 75-60 victory. Fifth-year guard Michelle Errico led the way with 23 points and 6 rebounds and third-year forward Carmel M'Bikata contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.
On Saturday night, the Blues put together another strong team performance against the Langara Falcons (3-6) and cruised to a 68-59 win. M'Bikata contributed another great game off the bench for the Blues as she finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds.
Head coach Ramin Sadaghiani was pleased overall with the team's performance, "our timing and execution was a bit off naturally due to the long break, but we got better as the weekend went on and we were able to get two wins on the road against two solid opponents." Sadaghiani noted that "M'Bikata was great in both games and gave us consistent scoring and rebounding. [Fourth-year guard] Francis Penafiel played her first weekend of the season due to an injury in the first half and showed great explosiveness."
Going forward, Sadaghiani says that his team need to continue to get better every day in practice, "with playoffs around the corner we have to make sure we can play our best basketball in February and March."
The CapU Blues host the CBC Bearcats (3-6) on Friday, Jan. 15th at 6 p.m. and the KPU Eagles (0-9) on Saturday, Jan. 16th at 5 p.m. at the Sportsplex in North Vancouver.
