Powered by a first quarter where they went on an 11-0 run and built up a 19-6 lead, the Capilano Blues (9-0) women’s basketball team remained undefeated in PACWEST play with a convincing 74-39 win over the visiting Camosun Chargers (4-5).
"Defensively we came out strong early in the game, so we were able to take Camosun out of their rhythm on the offensive end," said Capilano head coach Ramin Sadaghiani.
Fourth-year forward Carmelle M’Bikata led the Blues on both sides of the ball, racking up a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both game-high totals.
"Carmelle was incredibly efficient tonight. She had a great game while playing limited minutes so we could rest her for tomorrow's big game against VIU."
Secondary scoring came from Reiko Ohama who drilled a trio of three-pointers and tallied 13 points, and Sherrie Errico who chipped in 10. In total, 10 different Blues players scored a field goal and helped to contribute 22 assists, led by Ashley De La Cruz Yip’s eight helpers.
On defence, Capilano limited the Chargers to 23.1% shooting from the field and won the rebounding battle 62-38.
For Camosun, Ali Wergeland led the way with eight points off the bench.
Capilano finishes their weekend with a match-up against Vancouver Island University tomorrow at 12pm at home, while Camosun visits Douglas College.
