Two strong offensive performances carried the Capilano University Blues women’s basketball team to a pair of victories this past weekend in Squamish, as the Blues downed the Quest University Kermodes twice to remain atop the PACWEST standings.

Both teams got out to a slow start in Friday’s 81-60 win for Capilano, with the score 10-7 for CapU after the first quarter. The Blues pushed their lead to seven at halftime, but Quest hung around to outscore the visitors in the third quarter and trailed by just six heading into the final frame. That’s when the Capilano offence exploded to the tune of 35 points – putting the game out of reach.

All 10 Blues found the scoresheet, with most of the damage coming from inside the paint. CapU shot a season-high 49.2% from the field and scored 21 points from the free throw line – drawing 25 total fouls. The Blues made only eight attempts from beyond the arc – well below their season average – but shot at a 50.0% rate.

Zuzia Zdziechowski led the team on offence with a career-high 18 points, while Ashley dela Cruz Yip and Reiko Ohama both had 15. Carmelle M’Bikata tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Blues found their offensive stride earlier on in Saturday’s rematch, as they scored 22 points in the opening frame and didn’t score fewer than 19 in any quarter en route to an 85-61 victory over the Kermodes. Once again, all 10 Blues scored in the game – powering the team to a season-high 85 points.

The Blues shot 46.4% from the field and 36.0% from three-point land, while holding Quest to marks of 30.7% and 18.5%. Capilano also recorded 14 steals, with five players tallying at least two.

M’Bikata and dela Cruz Yip tied for the team-high for points with 14, while Emma Cunningham had 12 and Ohama shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc as part of her 11. Five Blues had at least two assists in the game, with dela Cruz Yip dishing out seven of the team’s 20.

The two wins improve Capilano to 9-3 in PACWEST play and keep them in first place with 18 points. A crucial two-game series against third place Camosun is on the horizon this upcoming weekend, as the Chargers defeated the Blues 80-74 in their first meeting back in November. Tip-off is at 6:00pm on Friday, January 26 and at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 27.
