In a tightly-contested defensive match-up, a goal from Catrina Olstrom in the 44th minute proved to be the difference as the Capilano University Blues women’s soccer team defeated the Langara College Falcons 1-0 in the semi-finals of the PACWEST Championships.
The two teams played close games all season long – with a 1-0 win for Cap and two draws over three matches – and Friday night proved to be no different. The scoring chances for either side were few and far between, but it was the speed and hard work of Olstrom at striker that broke the scoreless draw.
The rookie forward ran onto a through ball and beat both the Langara defender and goalkeeper to it, then battled to turn and get a shot off. She got just enough on the kick, and the ball rolled across the line to give the Blues the lead.
Capilano kept up their sound defensive play in the second half, limiting Langara’s offensive attacks. The Blues back line held tough and cleared away any chances that entered the 18-yard box, while Nikki Gerbrandt controlled the game in net and made two saves to secure the clean sheet. The Falcons threw everything they could at the Blues in the waning minutes, but CapU held strong to close out the win.
Olstrom was named the match's Player of the Game.
"The team battled hard, and we kept it tight on the back end," said head coach Dennis Kindel after the game.
With the victory, Capilano advances to tomorrow’s gold medal match and will play the winner of the other semi-final between Douglas College and Vancouver Island University. The winner of that game will also advance to the CCAA Nationals held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Kick-off for the final is at 7:00pm at Kermode Field in Squamish, and the game can also be viewed online at pacwestbc.tv.
