The Capilano University Blues women’s basketball team opened up their 2018-19 PACWEST season with a pair of victories on the road, defeating both the Columbia Bible College Bearcats and Langara College Falcons to star the year 2-0.
Last season’s PACWEST champs, the Blues entered the season with six new faces and a new head coach, Chris Weimer, who had served as lead assistant the past six seasons. While Weimer acknowledged before season that the new-look roster could take some time to hit their stride, CapU hit the ground running over the weekend and received contributions from across the board – most notably from their returning core.
In Friday’s 82-44 win over CBC in Abbotsford, 10 different players found the score sheet and six hit at least one three-pointer in a strong shooting effort. The Blues were down by two points after the first quarter, but then outscored the Bearcats 69-29 over the remaining three frames en route to the victory.
Fifth-year guard Sherrie Errico led the Blues with 24 points, shooting 8-of-14 and making 4-of-7 from three-point land. Rookie Alessia Brutto had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and added five rebounds and three steals.
On Saturday in Vancouver, the CapU used a strong defensive start and a 31-point third quarter to power themselves to an 83-63 win over Langara. Five Blues scored in double-figures, led by Errico with 16. Reiko Ohama and Brutto – who had a double-double with 13 rebounds – were close behind with 14 points apiece, while Jessica Wolpert had 12 off the bench and Simrat Dosanjh chipped in 10.
CapU was again efficient from beyond the arc, shooting 45.8% – which helped overcome 30 turnovers. The Blues also limited the Falcons to a 28.6 field goal percentage and forced them into 31 turnovers.
The Blues are now back at home this weekend for their first two home games of the season. On Friday night at 6:00pm they host Vancouver Island University in match-up of the only two undefeated teams in the conference, and on Saturday at 1:00pm they face Camosun College in a rematch of last year’s PACWEST championship final. All games are at the Centre for Sport and Wellness (formerly Sportsplex).
