In an early-season battle between the PACWEST’s only two undefeated teams, the Capilano University Blues women’s basketball dropped a 63-53 decision to the Vancouver Island University Mariners on Friday night in North Vancouver.
CapU trailed by one after a back-and-forth first half, but VIU outscored the home side 22-14 in the third quarter to build up their lead. The Blues hung around in the fourth quarter and kept the deficit to single-digits for most of the frame, but the Mariners were able to maintain a comfortable lead thanks to their strong team defence.
The Blues shot just 33.3% from the floor and 23.3% from beyond the arc in the contest, as the Mariners didn’t allow much space on defence. VIU didn’t shoot much better — posing marks for 34.4% and 29.6% — but took advantage of 24 trips to the foul line, compared to just five to Capilano.
Sherrie Errico led the Blues with 13 points in the contest, while Reiko Ohama and Alessia Brutto both had nine. Ohama posted the team-high for both rebounds and assists with eight and five, respectively.
The Blues fall to 2-1 on the season, while VIU improves to 3-0 and takes sole control of first place in the conference. CapU will now host the Camosun College Chargers on Saturday in a rematch of last season’s PACWEST Championship final, which CapU won 75-70. Tip-off is at 1:00pm in the Centre of Sport and Wellness (formerly Sportsplex).
