The Capilano women’s volleyball team continued their winning ways this past weekend, completing a home-and-home weekend sweep of the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. After downing UFV in straight sets on Friday night in Abbotsford, the Blues took Saturday’s contest 3-1.
The first two sets on Saturday were back-and-forth affairs with numerous lead changes, but Capilano pulled together down the stretch and closed out both frames to jump out to a 2-0 lead. After the Cascades stayed alive with a 25-20 win in the third set, the Blues returned to form and finished off a 25-22 victory in the fourth to close out the weekend sweep.
Fifth-year Kira Sutcliffe led the way on both offence and defence in both matches, racking up 17 kills on 50% hitting in Friday’s contest to go along with 14 digs, while on Saturday she added 14 kills and 13 digs. Second-year Tyneille Neufeld provided secondary contributions both nights as well, totaling seven kills and 11 digs in game one and 12 and 17 in game two.
Setter Sarah Hughes again had a strong weekend passing the ball, totaling 75 assists over the two games while also recording 13 digs in Friday’s contest.
Capilano now sits in third in the PACWEST after nine weeks of play with an 11-5 record and 22 points, just two back of first-place Douglas College. The Blues now head into a bye week, and will resume play on Jan. 28 and 29 at the Sportsplex in North Vancouver with a two-game set against the College of the Rockies.
