Blues Women’s Soccer Weekend Recap – Provincials

The Capilano University Blues women’s soccer team (3-5-4) entered the PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championship having not medaled in nearly 10 years but looked to change that.

The Blues kicked off the tournament on Friday against a top ranked Douglas College Royals (7-2-3) squad in a thrilling match that went into extra time. The young squad came out looking for a good start but nerves might have got the best of them early in the match.

The Royals scored first thanks to a goal in the 19th minute courtesy of PACWEST Player of the Year, Andrea Perrotta. The Blues wouldn’t go quietly though, they settled in as their nerves subsided and began to produce scoring opportunities. Then in the 40th minute, league All-Star, Taylor Einhorn, broke through the Royals defense and netted her first of the tournament to tie the match. The remaining 50 minutes solved nothing as the match went to extra time.

Taylor Wettig scored off a corner kick in extra time to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Despite this, the Blues kept pushing looking for the equalizer but the Royals defense stifled every opportunity and managed to hold on for the win.

Head coach, Dennis Kindel, kept it positive despite the loss. “It’s not the result we wanted but our team left everything on the field. I’m very proud of the girls.”

On Saturday, the Blues would battle the Langara Falcons for the opportunity to take home a bronze medal.

The Blues came out looking strong as they knocked a couple of shots off the crossbar early in the match. Taylor Einhorn once again opened the scoring for the Blues as she put one past the Falcons goal keeper for a 1-0 lead going into half-time.

The Falcons came out strong in the second half as Guila Repole scored in the 60th minute to tie the match at 1. Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the second half but neither team was able to get the go ahead goal. The match would be determined via penalty kicks.

Brittany Roussey came up big in penalty kicks as she managed to stop the Falcons from scoring twice. This opened the doors for Dominika Paige as she scored the final goal in penalty kicks to secure the victory and a 3rd place bronze medal finish for the Blues.

Taylor Einhorn was named Player of the Game against Langara while also being named the tournament Top Forward for her performance over the weekend.

Overall, Kindel was pleased with his team’s performance this season. “The season as a whole was amazing for what is still a very young squad. It wasn’t the result we wanted in the semi-finals but we weren’t going to settle for anything less than a medal.”
The team gets a break now that the season and playoffs are finished but next year will come in the blink of an eye. And expectations will only increase with players heading into their second and third year of eligibility. But for now, the team can relax and relish their achievements as they’ve shown much improvement this year.
