Chris Raeside, CapU Athletic Events and Sport Development Officer
The Capilano University Blues women’s soccer team (3-5-4) entered the final week of regular season play looking to gain a little momentum before the PACWEST Soccer Provincial Championship. The VIU Mariners and Douglas College Royals had other plans though.
The Blues kicked off the week with a makeup game against the Quest Kermodes (0-8-4) on Thursday evening. Despite having a difficult season, the Kermodes battled the Blues to a
1-1 tie with goals coming from Taylor Einhorn of the Blues and Katelyn Zell of the Kermodes.
The ladies then traveled to Nanaimo on Saturday afternoon where they faced the VIU Mariners (5-2-5). While the first half was quiet, the Mariners would open up the scoring in the 53rd minute and then add an insurance marker in the 85th minute for a 2-0 victory over the Blues.
The Blues would then face longtime rival, the Douglas College Royals (7-2-3), on Sunday afternoon to conclude the regular season. Brooklyn Doucette of the Blues opened the scoring in the 6th minute but the Royals Samantha Frketich would tie it up shortly later with the first half finishing 1-1. The second half included five additional goals with Gagan Pamma scoring her second and third goal of the season. However, the Royals would hang on and defeat the Blues 4-3 despite trailing 3-2 part way through the second half.
The men’s soccer team entered the final week of regular season play looking to maintain their undefeated record and did just that. They defeated the Quest University Kermodes
(3-8-1) 2-0 on Thursday evening with goals coming from first year midfielder David Genet and third year forward Keith Jackson.
The Blues then added another statement win to their record with a 4-1 victory over the VIU Mariners (7-4-1). Keith Jackson scored two goals while Genet and fourth year defender Nicolas Morello scored one goal each.
The guys then battled the Douglas College Royals (5-5-2) to a 1-1 tie despite the absence of a few notable starters with Jackson scoring the lone goal. Keith Jackson’s four goal weekend catapulted him to the top of the goal scoring leaderboard for a total of eleven goals in 12 games.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams both qualified for the PACWEST Soccer Provincial Championships hosted by Capilano University at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex from October 28-29. The women’s team enters the tournament as the #4 seed and will play the Douglas College Royals at 12:30 pm on Friday. The men’s team enters the tournament as the #1 seed and will play the Quest University Kermodes at 3:00 pm on Friday.
