Blues Soccer – National Championship Bronze Semi-Final Recap
Chris Raeside, CapU Athletic Events and Sport Development Officer
The men’s soccer team enters the 2016 CCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship as the #2 seed. They finished the regular season as PACWEST Champions with a 10-0-2 record and are looking to show why they made the national final last season and are favorites to do it again this year. But first they had to get past the #7 seed Holland Hurricanes.
The Blues came out with energy dominating the first 25 minutes of the match but were unable to get one past the goal keeper despite numerous chances. The Hurricanes weren’t to be pushed around though as they began to shift play to the Blues side of the field but the success would be short lived.
Late in the first half Kristian Yli-Hietanen opened the scoring for the Blues as he scored a shortbreak away for a 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later Nicolas Morello would be granted a penalty kick after Yli-Hietanen was taken down just inside the 18 yard box. He would make no mistake giving the Blues a 2-0 lead.
The second half saw the Blues continue to apply pressure as the Hurricanes fought to close the gap. Edris Najm would make it 3-0 in the 60th minute and Cristian Bita would net a header after Nicolas Morello fought his way up field before crossing it to the far goalpost.
Kristian Yli-Hietanen was named Player of the Match.
The Blues advance to the semi-finals against tournament host Keyano College on Thursday, Nov 10th at 4:30 pm PST.
