Blues Soccer Weekend Recap – Week 3
Chris Raeside, CapU Athletic Events and Sport Development Officer
The Capilano University Blues men’s soccer team (4-0-1) continued their strong start to the 2016 season this past weekend. This was a major focus for the team coming into this season considering their struggles last September. Despite the struggle, the Blues still won the PACWEST Provincial Championship and look to do so again.
On Saturday afternoon, the Blues defeated the visiting Langara Falcons 4-0 earning a rest day on Sunday. Again, the Blues were led by Keith Jackson who out muscled and outworked his opponents to score two goals. Jackson currently leads the PACWEST in scoring with 5 goals in 5 games. Kamyar Amini scored his first goal of the season and Tim Wigglesworth scored his first PACWEST goal ever. Head coach Paul Dailly commented on the strength of his team’s performance, “I thought the team played very well this weekend and created a number of good scoring opportunities. We were able to capitalize offensively and did well defensively to preserve a clean sheet”.
On the women’s side, the Blues (1-1-3) looked to defeat the Falcons and pick up their second win of the season. The Falcons (3-1-2), who currently sit in first place, had other ideas though. The match was tightly contested with each team battling hard to deny each other scoring opportunities, but the Falcons managed to net two goals and take the win 2-0. Head coach Dennis Kindel thinks his team is starting to gel; “Our 10 new recruits have started to adapt to playing at the collegiate level and the team as a whole is starting to gel. Now we’re looking to cement our spot in the playoffs.”
The Blues play two home games this weekend as they take on the Vancouver Island University Mariners at 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm on Saturday and the Douglas College Royals at 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm on Sunday.
