Blues Soccer – National Championship Bronze Semi-Final Recap
Chris Raeside, CapU Athletic Events and Sport Development Officer
The men’s soccer team lost their chance to play for a national championship on Thursday but clinched the opportunity to play for a bronze medal on Friday.
The first 38 minutes of the match were scoreless as both teams were trying to figure each other out. Both teams had opportunities but it was the Blues who struck first in the 39th minute.
On what seemed like a harmless play, the Dynamiques goal keeper tried to clear the ball but mistruck it and passed it directly to CCAA All-Canadian Keith Jackson who calmly scored the open net goal for a 1-0 lead.
The Dynamiques seemed like they would get out of the first half down only one goal but the Blues managed to score another in extra time. Edris Najm sent a beautiful pass off a free kick to the far corner of the net where captain Devan Woolley got his head on it to give the Blues a 2-0 lead.
The second half saw an increase in intensity as both teams battled for control. Keith Jackson netted his second goal of the game in the 56th minute off a beautiful cross. In the 76th minute the Dynamiques goal keeper would challenge Nicolas Morello as he attacked on a break away picking up a red card. Morello would convert the penalty kick scoring the final goal of the game for a 4-0 lead.
Devan Woolley was named Player of the Match.
With this victory the team clinches a spot in CCAA National Championship bronze medal game Saturday at 1 pm PST against the Algonquin College Thunder.
