Taking on the CCAA’s #3 ranked team in their final home game of the season, the Capilano University Blues women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Douglas College Royals on Thursday night in North Vancouver.
After falling behind by seven early in the opening frame, CapU battled back down the stretch with a 7-1 run late in the set to pull within two at 23-21 and force a Douglas timeout. The visitors were able to stop the damage out of the huddle, as the Blues couldn’t get any closer and dropped the set 25-22.
The second saw Douglas go ahead 2-0 after a 25-17 victory, but CapU didn’t go away quietly in the third. Keeping the score close throughout the start, the home team broke open a 17-17 tie and maintained a multi-point lead over the rest of the frame to secure a 25-22 win that extended the match.
The comeback effort ended up falling short, as Douglas bounced back to take a quick eight-point lead in the fourth set and hold off a late push by CapU for a 25-22 victory.
Second-year outside hitter Isabela Lima had a strong all-around game with 24 kills and 17 digs on the night, and fourth-year Meghan Koven added nine kills, 19 digs, and two solo blocks. Vanesa Gatto had the team-high for digs with a career-high 22, and Kelsey Towers paced the offence with 44 assists.
The final game of the regular season goes on Saturday when CapU travels to New Westminster to face Douglas at 4:00pm. The following weekend the Blues will visit Cranbrook for the PACWEST Championship, hosted by the College of the Rockies. CapU will enter the tournament as the #5 seed and will face the #4 University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in the first round on Thursday, February 21; game times are to be announced early next week.
