The Capilano University Blues women’s volleyball team nearly pulled off an upset victory over the CCAA #3 ranked Douglas College Royals on Saturday night, but dropped a 3-2 decision in their final regular season game of 2018-19.

The Blues started the game strong, pulling out a 25-21 win in the opening frame and then using a 15-3 run to close out a convincing 25-11 victory in the second. The third set was again close, but this time it time it was Douglas who persevered by breaking open a 15-15 tie and keeping the match alive with a 25-21 win.

CapU had the win on their fingertips in the fourth, battling back from an early four-point deficit to bring up match point at 24-22. Yet the Royals stayed alive, winning the next four points out of a timeout to force a fifth and final set. The fifth set saw the Blues again battle back from an early hole and bring the score to within one at 12-11, but again Douglas rallied to win the next three points and secure the comeback win.

Three Blues topped double-digits for kills, with Isabela Lima and Meghan Koven tallying 13 apiece and Anika Kolybaba adding 11 on a .346 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, four players had at least 10 digs, with Koven leading the way with 16 and libero Vanesa Gatto racking up 15. Lima added 12 digs, 3 solo blocks, and 2 aces to go along with her 13 kills, and setter Kelsey Towers totaled 41 assists and 13 digs.

The Blues finish the regular season 8-16 and will now enter the PACWEST Championships as the #5 seed. They will take on the #4 University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Thursday, February 21 at 12:00pm PST at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, this year’s tournament host.
