2025-26 PACWEST COACH OF THE YEAR

Sue Soolsma assumed head coach duties of the Blues women's program in December of 2024. She served as an assistant with the team for two full seasons before taking the top job. 

As head coach, Sue led the Blues to six straight wins to begin 2025 and guided the team to the PACWEST postseason as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Facing a No. 3-seed Camosun team that was firing on all cylinders in the PACWEST semifinal, the Blues were upended in straight sets by the Chargers, putting them in the bronze-medal game against the CBC Bearcats. CapU dropped the first two sets to CBC, but showed great resilience and rebounded for a reverse sweep by winning the next three sets to claim the bronze.

Abby Betker was named to the PACWEST Tournament All-Star team, backing up her second-team All-Star nod from the regular season. Nnya Mbaoma added to her already decorated Blues career in 2024-25 by earning a second-consecutive PACWEST First-Team All-Star honour after leading the Blues with 272 kills in the regular season.  

A former Blues player, Soolsma played two seasons at Capilano from 1988 to 1990, under coaches Susan Miele and Nora Kountzelman. 

Since getting involved in coaching, Sue has accumulated vast experience within the North Shore club volleyball community and has coached players aged U13 through the post-secondary level. She is currently a director at Powerwest Volleyball Club and is a coach with the club's U15 girls team.
