The CapU Blues basketball teams travelled to Abbotsford Friday night to take on the CBC Bearcats. Having lost to the Bearcats 76-74 right before the winter break, the women were in tough from the start and couldn't break away in regular time. However, in overtime, the Blues were able to hang on for a 91-90 win behind an impressive 33 point, 10 rebound performance off the bench from third-year forward Carmel M'Bikata. Saturday's win against the Eagles came a bit easier as the Blues cruised to a 70-52 win behind second-year guard Sherrie Errico who had 20 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds off the bench. Head coach Ramin Sadaghiani had mixed feelings about the weekend, "offensively we were excellent but we need to be better on the defensive end. We cannot rely on our offence to put up 80 points per game so we have to make sure we are more committed to play hard defense heading into the playoffs."
On the men's side, the Blues were looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Douglas College Royals last weekend and did just that. After a slow first quarter, the Blues put together a solid team performance to take the 79-64 win over the Bearcats. The Blues were led by second-year guard Martin Bogajev who filled up the stat sheet with 30 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Other notable performances on the night include: Reese Morris (10 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists) and Brendan Bailey (18 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals). After the win, head coach Cassidy Kannemeyer was pleased with the adjustments his team made throughout the game to exploit the Bearcats' weaknesses and gave credit to three individual performances. "Brenden Bailey gave us a spark off the bench. I've been tinkering with line ups all week to help us break the losing streak so Brenden sacrificed himself to come off the bench and was aggressive. Martin couldn't miss and Reese flirted with a triple double."
Saturday saw much of the same from the Blues as they travelled to Surrey to take on the KPU Eagles. Again, Bogajev was fantastic in the 93-79 win as he put together a monster 37 point, 7 rebound performance while second-year forward Graddy Zubaidi added 11 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. Bogajev currently leads the PACWEST in scoring with 21.42 points per game.
The CapU Blues will be at home this weekend as they host the VIU Mariners on Friday, Feb. 12th (6/8 p.m.) and the Camosun Chargers on Saturday, Feb. 13th (1/3 p.m.).
