Silver Lining For Blues

Silver Lining For Blues

Ryan Watters, PACWEST Media

For the second straight season and fifth time in school history the Mariners are PACWEST champions after a hard fought victory over the host Blues.

In a low-scoring game the Mariners shot 36 per cent from the field led by tournament MVP Shayce Johnston who was seemingly unstoppable with 16 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes of play. She was the only player in double-digits as the Mariners used everyone on their roster for a balanced scoring attack. Danielle Vanbergen hit a pair of massive three pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with nine points.

The Blues, in their fifth straight PACWEST gold medal game, finish with the silver medal after shooting 38% from the field, but only 17% from behind the arch.

The Blues committed an uncharacteristic 25 turnovers which led to some easy scores on the other end. Despite the loss, the Blues will join the Mariners at the CCAA National championship tournament in a couple of weeks with VIU hosting the event.

Players of the Game:
VIU – Shayce Johnston
Capilano – Reiko Ohama

Following the game the tournament All-Stars and MVP were announced:

Jessica Castillo – Douglas Royals
Kate Mallette – Capilano Blues
Reiko Ohama – Capilano Blues
Madeline Hart – VIU Mariners
Amber Lease – VIU Mariners

MVP – Shayce Johnston – VIU Mariners

Both teams are headed to the CCAA national championships by virtue of the fact the PACWEST conference was granted two berths this year. VIU hosts the tournament March 17 to 21 in Nanaimo, B.C.
