The Capilano University Blues women’s volleyball team travelled east to Cranbrook this past weekend and came back with a pair of wins, defeating the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Friday and Saturday to extend their win streak to six.

CapU played an efficient match on Friday night, taking down COTR in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-23). The Blues offence had a 0.493 hitting percentage on the evening, and made only 11 attacking errors compared to 45 kills. Tyneille Neufeld led the offence with 13 kills on a 0.600 percentage, while Isabela Lima had nine at a 0.429 rate, Courtney Becker tallied seven at 0.750, and Zoe Mydansky had six at 0.714. Trina Ewashkiw orchestrated the offence, and posted a season-best for assists per set with an average of 12.67.

On defence, Tracy Ewashkiw led the way with 10 digs, and five different players recorded a block.

Saturday’s contest went down to the wire, as the two teams traded set wins until Capilano took the fifth and final frame. The Blues went up 2-1 with a dominant 25-8 win in the third set, but the Avalanche fought back to extend the match with a narrow 25-23 win in the fourth. CapU kept their composure and responded, getting out to a quick lead in the final game before taking it 15-11 to secure the weekend sweep.

Neufeld again posted the game-high for kills with 17, while Lima had 11 kills and 16 digs. Trina Ewashkiw had another strong all-around game with 44 assists, 14 digs, four aces, and 2 blocks, while her twin sister Tracy had a game-high 19 digs. The Blues featured an imposing net presence all game, as they racked up 13 blocks; Mydansky had four, and Becker had three.

The wins improve Capilano to 10-6 in the regular season, and keep them in fourth place in the PACWEST – just two points back of first place. Next weekend they’ll host first-place Vancouver Island University, with games at 6:00pm on Friday, January 19 and 1:00pm on Saturday, January 20 in the Sportsplex.
