The Capilano University Blues women’s volleyball team dropped a tough three-set decision to the host University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in the consolation final of the PACWEST Volleyball Championship to finish their season in fourth place. It’s the first time in four seasons that CapU hasn’t earned a medal at the tournament.
The #3 seeded Cascades played efficiently in all four sets, and forced the #4 seeded Blues to play catch-up right from the start. After going down by seven midway through the first frame and losing PACWEST First Team All-Star Tyneille Neufeld to injury, a timeout and double substitution of Zoe Dendes and Zoe Mydansky helped CapU cut their deficit to four at 19-15. However, UFV responded with a run down the stretch and took the set 25-18.
Capilano got out to a stronger start in the second set, as strong blocking at the net helped them build a 9-6 advantage. The maintained that lead at 16-14, but a three-point run by UFV gave them the lead and forced a CapU timeout when down 17-16. The Blues called another down 21-18, but they couldn’t fight all the way back and dropped the set 25-20.
The third set was close throughout, with the score sitting tied at 19 before UFV won two crucial points in a row to take the late lead. Capilano called a timeout, and then another down 23-22, but they couldn’t find an answer out of the huddle and lost the final frame 25-22.
Second-year libero Tracy Ewashkiw recorded 15 digs and was named Capilano’s Player of the Game. Isabala Lima tallied 11 kills and four digs, and middle Courtney Becker had four blocks and five kills.
Lima was named a 2017-18 PACWEST Tournament All-Star.
