In a battle of two of the top 10 teams in CCAA women’s volleyball, the Vancouver Island University Mariners got the best of the Capilano University Blues on Friday night and snapped Capilano’s six-game win streak with a 3-0 win.
VIU set the tone early, as Capilano struggled to find their offensive stride and made a number of unforced errors. The Blues made some late subs in hopes of turning the tide, but the Mariners took the first frame 25-16.
A similar trend continued in the second frame, as CapU struggled to find good offensive looks and VIU made several blocks at the net. The Blues again made a late push, but the #3-ranked Mariners took the set 25-18.
Both teams traded leads throughout the start of the third set, with neither team ahead by more than a point until VIU went on a five-point run at 9-9 to go up 14-9. CapU middle Courtney Becker subbed on and made an impact with her serving to bring it back to a one-point game at 14-13, but VIU was able to regain a comfortable margin with their powerful attack and strong defence en route to the sweep.
The Blues were playing without captain Tyneille Neufeld, who sat out with a sprained ankle. Neufeld is second in the PACWEST in kills and total offence.
Capilano suffers their first loss since November, and falls to 10-7 in PACWEST play – remaining in fourth place. VIU improves to 12-3 and keeps pace with Douglas atop the conference standings.
The two teams will rematch tomorrow afternoon when Capilano hosts VIU on Saturday at 1:00pm in the Sportsplex. It’ll be the fourth and final time these two teams square off during the regular season, with VIU taking the first three matchups.
