The Capilano Blues men's basketball team earned its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon, with five different players notching double figures in scoring in a 78-66 win over the visiting Okanagan College (OC) Coyotes.
Getting into the win column for the first time this year was a welcome result for head coach Cassidy Kannemeyer and the Blues.
"Anytime I have won in my career, no matter the scope of the game, it's always relief," said Kannemeyer.
The Blues felt they were too tentative defensively on Friday night and wanted to address that going into Saturday's rematch.
"We watched film about a couple hours before the game together and we talked a lot about ball pressure," said Kannemeyer. "We thought on Friday night we let them just walk into whatever they wanted and we let them get into a rhythm. Tonight we wanted to take away their rhythm at all costs."
Blues are back in action Friday November 29 on the road against Douglas College.
The Blues last home game of 2019 is Saturday, November 30 at 8pm against the CBC Bearcats in the CapU Centre for Sport and Wellness.
On Friday, OC forward Seth Blundell scored 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting to lead the Coyotes to a 97-78 victory.
The visitors got just eight points from their bench but it didn't matter because each of the team's starters got well into double digits including 17 from both Matthew LaFontaine and Hunter Hughes.
OC scored 32 points in a high-scoring opening quarter that saw the Blues put up 27 of their own including 10 from forward Dawit Nuguse. Blundell had both of his threes on the night in the first en route to 14 points in the first 10 minutes.
The offensive pace slowed in the second and the Blues were able to make a small bite out of the Coyotes lead in the third. But needing a big final quarter to overtake the visitors, Capilano got disorganized in their desperation to generate buckets and, compounded by a Coyotes press, wound up committing 12 turnovers in the fourth which essentially took care of any comeback effort.
OC shot 57.1 per cent from the field on 36-of-63 shooting and were also 15-of-17 from the line.
Nuguse wound up with 20 points on the night to lead the Blues while Nathan Bromige had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Jack Teny had a season high 15 points off the bench and was 3-for-5 from three-point range.
