Blues Blank Visiting Chargers

Blues Blank Visiting Chargers

Brent Mutis, CapU Sport Information & Compliance Officer

CapU Centre for Sport and Wellness A convincing Saturday afternoon with set wins of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-13 allowed the Capilano Blues to wrap up a weekend sweep of the visiting Camosun College Chargers and earn their sixth win in a row.

Outside hitter Jacob Hopkins played extended minutes for the first time since opening weekend and looked fully healed from his injury as he racked up 11 kills and contributed seven digs. Malachi McMullen and Ben Friesen each had 10 digs and first-year middle Leonard Tesarik was in on four blocks.

Fifth-year setter Simon Friesen recorded 24 assists, which game him 55 for the weekend, and said after Saturday's game he likes the direction the team is headed.

"Our coaches are giving us a lot of good insight and we're finally starting to execute their plan for us," said the Abbotsford product. "And we're really coming together as a team as well; we're playing really, really well together which is always good at this part of the season."

Things went so well for the Blues Saturday, Simon was able to take a breather for most of the third set with Jenson Yuen taking over the setter spot.

"Personally, I never like leaving the court but I think that Jenson came in and did a really good job," said Friesen. "He runs a good offence as well and it's just cool to see (from the sideline) how high we actually are when we're blocking and hitting and how fast the game actually moves from a different perspective."

The weekend might have gone differently but the Chargers were without standouts Vitor Pereira and Eduardo Bida, both sidelined with injuries at the moment. Bida was sixth in the PACWEST in kills per set going into the weekend while Pereira was third.

Next up for the Blues are road games at Columbia Bible College Thursday, Nov. 21 (8 p.m.) and Saturday Nov. 23 (7 p.m.)

On Friday for the Blues, Rafael Hilario and Ben Friesen combined for 18 kills, hitting .625 as a duo, to lead the Capilano Blues men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over the visiting Camosun College Chargers in the opening night of their weekend series.

The Blues prevented the Chargers from reaching 20 points in each set with scores of 25-16, 26-16 and 25-19.

Friesen registered 31 assists for the match while Enis Besirevic recorded two assists and McMullin had five digs.

Head coach Dave Dooley was able to get floor time for all his players on the night. Hilario led the way with 11 points of total offence.
