The Capilano University Blues women’s soccer team was on alternating ends of 3-0 decisions this past weekend, first shutting out Langara College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon before falling by the same score to Douglas College on Sunday. With two games left in the regular season, CapU is in third place with a 4-4-2 record and 14 points, two points back of first place.
Capilano made it three wins in a row over Langara and momentarily moved into top spot in the PACWEST thanks to Saturday’s shutout win. Brooklynn Doucette scored her fourth of the season at the 14 minute mark, and Jami MacCara pushed the lead to two in the 32nd minute with her first of the year. Catrina Olstrom then put the game away in the 65th to make it a 3-0 final. Doucette and Olstrom now sit third and fourth in league scoring, respectively.
The Blues defence played a strong 90 minutes, allowing five shots total and only one on net – meaning Nikki Gerbrandt needed to make just one save to record her second shutout in a row.
Capilano couldn’t carry their effort over into Sunday’s game, falling 3-0 to Douglas to slide back down to third place in the crowded conference standings. The Royals scored twice shortly before halftime and then once more in the 47th minute, and keeper Alexa Gazzola made four saves to keep the Blues off the scoreboard.
The final two games of the regular season happen next weekend in Nanaimo when the Blues face Vancouver Island University on Saturday and Sunday. CapU needs at least one win or a loss by Langara to clinch a playoff berth, and two wins would clinch first place and an automatic bye to the PACWEST Championship Final (three teams make the playoffs; the #2 and #3 seeds play in the semifinal, and the winner faces the #1 seed who receives a bye to the final).
Saturday’s game goes at 1:00pm, and Sunday’s is at 12:00pm. The PACWEST Championships are hosted by Capilano University on October 26 and 27 and the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
