A trio of Capilano University Blues women’s soccer student-athletes were named PACWEST Conference All-Stars on Thursday, with all three earning the honour for the first time in their CapU careers.
In her fifth and final season in the PACWEST, Marsha Chesshire was voted an all-star thanks to her strong play at sweeper. The foundation of the Blues back line, Chesshire is consistently all over the pitch, as her ability to read the play allows her to break up opponents’ scoring threats and help start offensive attacks. CapU head coach Dennis Kindel praises her leadership and defending abilities among her many talents.
Another consistent player in the centre of the pitch for Capilano is fourth-year midfielder Jamia MacCara. A key aspect of the team’s attacking offence, MacCara is often the one setting up plays, though got on the scoreboard herself in Week 7 with a tally against Langara. A leader by example, the Seycove Secondary graduate played nearly every minute of the season and was a controlling force for the Blues on both sides of the ball.
The third Blue named to the 2018 all-star team is Brooklynn Doucette. The third-year midfielder was one of the league’s top offensive threats, scoring four goals to finish in third place on the PACWEST scoring leaderboard. Last years Capilano Scholar Athlete of the Year, Doucette’s play up front and on the wing also helped set-up several other chances for the Blues.
Capilano finished the regular season with a 4-5-3 record, which put them in third place. They’ll face Douglas College in the semifinals of the PACWEST Championships, which get underway at 12:00pm on Friday, October 26 at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. The winner will move on to face Vancouver Island University in the final on Saturday at 12:00pm, with a gold medal and a berth at Nationals on the line.
