The Capilano University Blues women’s soccer team got back to their winning ways on a rainy Sunday afternoon in North Vancouver, building up a three-goal lead and holding on for a 3-1 win over the Langara College Falcons.

Neither team developed much in the way of scoring chances throughout the opening half until CapU got on the board in the 32nd minute. Third-year forward Brooklynn Doucette made a run down the right wing and delivered a cross that went off the inside of the left post, and Catrina Olstrom was there in front of the net to convert off the rebound for her third goal of the year.

The Blues doubled their lead out of halftime, as first-year defender Holly Ruffalls scored the first goal of her PACWEST career in the 49th minute. Off a corner kick, Ruffalls tracked down the cross and got her foot on it, tapping the ball into the bottom corner to give the Blues a 2-0 advantage.

Some added insurance came 12 minutes later when Arin McIldoon found Doucette in the middle of the pitch, who made no mistake for her third goal of the season.

Langara got on the board in the 73rd minute on a tally by Violet Bacon off a free kick, but the Blues back line held firm throughout the remainder of the contest to preserve the 3-1 win. CapU keeper Nikki Gerbrandt made four saves in the victory, while Falcons goalie Siera Grieco made seven.

The Blues pick-up a much-needed three points with the win, improving them to 2-3-2 and eight points. With five regular season games remaining, they sit two points back of third place and four points back of first, with one game in hand over two of the three other teams. The top three teams qualify for the PACWEST Championships, hosted by CapU at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex on October 26 and 27.

The next scheduled match for CapU is on Saturday, October 13 when they face Langara on the road in Vancouver. Capilano’s five remaining games this season will all be on the road.
