The Capilano University Blues women’s soccer team will head into the PACWEST Championships as the #3 seed, as they picked up a draw and a loss in their final weekend of regular season play against Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo.
CapU finishes the regular season with a 4-5-3 record and 15 points, putting them in third place in a crowded PACWEST standings. They’ll face second place Douglas College in the conference semifinals, with the winner moving on to play VIU in the final with PACWEST gold and a berth at Nationals on the line.
The Blues fell behind 2-0 in Saturday’s contest against VIU, but cut the deficit to one in the 76th minute on a goal by Claire Ye off a scramble in front of the net. The comeback was cut short, though, as the Mariners answered back 10 minutes later and claimed a 3-1 victory to clinch top spot in the conference.
The playoff was already set heading into Sunday, as Langara’s loss to Douglas on Saturday secured Capilano’s third place finish. Yet the Blues still came out strong, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Jessika Thaler scored her first career PACWEST goal in the 13th minute to get CapU on the board, and defender Jessica Price jumped into the play to score shortly after.
After VIU got on the board in the 52nd minute, Ye scored her fourth of the season off an indirect free kick to restore the two-goal lead. The Mariners scored again in the 62nd to cut into the lead, and in extra time they found an equalizer to make it a 3-3 final and give each team one point in their final regular season contest.
Ye, Brooklynn Doucette, and Catrina Olstrom finished tied for the team-lead in goals with four apiece, and all earned spots in the top five of the PACWEST scoring leaderboard.
The conference semifinal between Capilano and Douglas goes on Friday, October 26 at 12:00pm at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. The Blues went 1-2-1 in their four meetings against the Royals this season.
The PACWEST women’s soccer final is at 12:00pm on Saturday, October 27. Should Capilano advance to the final against VIU, they would need to win gold to secure a spot at Nationals; The PACWEST receives two berths, with Douglas earning one as the host institution.
