Blues move into second place with weekend sweep over Chargers

The CapU Blues (7-3) hosted the Camosun Chargers (7-3) this past weekend at the Sportsplex. On Friday night, it took the Blues a little while to get going as they lost the first set 16-25, but they were able to turn it around and win the next three sets (25-16,25-21,25-13) to take the match 3-1. Head coach Cal Wohlford thought his team really started to play together after they lost the first set. "Our key factor was Sarah Hughes who was moving the ball around to different hitters. Everyone as a team contributed to the win by either defense, blocking or serving… everybody did something positive."

Trying to complete the weekend sweep, the Blues were back at it Saturday afternoon for a rematch with the Chargers. This time the Chargers were able to force the game to five sets; however, the Blues held on for the 3-2 victory (29-27, 25-17, 24-26, 21-25, 15-8).

Wohlford was pleased with his team's performance, "we started well and were able to take some pressure off ourselves after taking a back-and-forth first set. Camosun played stronger, adding different shots and plays in and we seemed to take our foot off the pedal a little bit. But by midway in the fourth set we started to get our groove back a bit and finished strong in the fifth."

Notable statistical performances on the weekend (over two games) for the Blues include: Mika Chow (49 digs), Kira Sutcliffe (25 kills, 8 blocks, 1 ace), Alexis Sebok (26 kills, 4 blocks, 2 aces), Danae Shephard (15 kills,6 blocks,1 ace), Meghan Koven (21 kills,3 blocks, 1 ace) and Sarah Hughes (23 digs, 9 kills, 4 blocks, 2 aces)

The CapU Blues (7-3) will finish off the first semester of play in Abbotsford this coming weekend as they take on the UFV Cascades (3-7) on Friday, Nov. 27th at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 28th at 5 p.m.
