The CapU Blues (9-7) returned to the court on Friday night for a double-header with the first-place VIU Mariners (14-4) at the Sportsplex. The Blues came out with energy and intensity as they took the first set, 25-20 with strong overall team play. Unfortunately, the Mariners were able to take the next two sets (19-25, 25-23). Down 2-1, the Blues came back with a vengeance, taking a dominating early lead 15-6, to eventually win the fourth set 25-16 and force a fifth and deciding set. A back-and-forth fifth set gave way to a 15-11 set victory and 3-2 match win for the Mariners.
On Saturday afternoon, the Blues were hoping to finish off the weekend with at least a split against the Mariners. After dropping the first set 13-25, the Blues cruised to a 3-1 victory, with three straight set wins (25-16, 25-21, 25-21).
Head coach Cal Wohlford was pleased with his team's performance, "we definitely played well this weekend and were able to execute when it counted Saturday. Kira [Sutcliffe] was solid for us, playing one of her best offensive games [Friday night] having 20 kills and adding 10 more on Saturday."
Wohlford also credited his bench in the victory, "our entire bench contributed to Saturday's win. Abby [O'Neill] played some solid defense tallying 17 digs; both Kolby [Richter] and Danae [Shephard] had a great blocking game notching five blocks each."
The Blues (9-7) travel to Victoria this coming weekend as they take on the second-place Camosun Chargers (11-7) on Friday, January 29 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, January 30 at 1 p.m.
