After 28 years, Capilano University Manager of Athletics and Recreation Milt Williams has announced his retirement.
During his tenure at Capilano University, Williams was engaged in a number of roles ranging from the Human Kinetics Department (now known as the School of Kinesiology) and the diploma program, to his current role as Manager of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Williams has guided the Department and the Blues varsity athletics program through the evolving landscape of post-secondary education and athletics.
"In my position, I have had the privilege of working with excellent staff, outstanding coaches, and exceptional student-athletes," said Williams. “Few people are afforded the opportunity to serve their community in a capacity such as I have for more than two decades, promoting and encouraging our students, staff and faculty to live an active healthy lifestyle and helping our student-athletes in their quest to win championships – in the classroom, in competition and in life."
Since Williams joined CapU, Blues teams have claimed 12 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national titles and 32 PACWEST provincial titles. In his time, 63 student-athletes have earned Academic All-Canadian status and 57 have been named CCAA All-Canadians. He was also the driving force behind the expansion of the recreation programs and the infrastructure for the Centre for Sport and Wellness.
Williams has served in many leadership roles at the University and with various governing sport bodies. He has served on the CapU Senate, Education Council, the Well-being Advisory Committee, Manager of Housing, and the President’s Advisory Committee among others. Outside of campus, he has served as the president of the Physical Education and Kinesiology Articulation Committee, an executive member of the PACWEST board and as a CCAA board member.
“The thrill for me has been the satisfaction of having been a small part of helping young adults develop, graduate, and find success as they pursue their talents and passions," said Williams. "For this, I am truly grateful.”
The passion, vision, dedication, and visionary leadership Williams embodied will be missed.
A search for his replacement will get underway in June.
