When Blues soccer returns to Lillooet Park, it will be a welcome indication life is returning to normal but players and fans alike will have additional reasons to enjoy the beautiful game at Capilano University.
Recent work undertaken by the District of North Vancouver, in conjunction with the CapU Department of Athletics and Recreation, has added some significant upgrades to the only all-grass pitch in the PACWEST.
Most notably, team dugouts have been installed on the northwest sideline, offering a professional look and feel for Blues players and visiting teams. New European-style goals have also been installed.
“Working with the District of North Vancouver has been a pleasure,” said CapU Manager of Athletics and Recreation Milt Williams. “Their commitment to excellent service to the community and supporting University athletics on the North Shore has been tremendous and much appreciated.”
In order to make the new dugouts a reality, team benches have been moved to the sideline opposite where they were the last time the Blues took the field.
Part of the slope above the northwest sideline was removed to clear space for the dugouts and a rock retaining wall has been installed. The addition gives some relief to the sideline and offers variety to the landscape.
Another change made to the field is permanent posts installed behind the goals. This will allow the goal nets to be lifted into a box shape similar to that seen in professional soccer.
The last activity that took place at Lillooet Park was training for the Blues’ men’s and women’s teams in August and September of last year. It is hoped competition can return in the fall of 2021.
