Having coached six years at Capilano University, Blues men’s basketball head coach Cassidy Kannemeyer has announced his intention to move on to a new opportunity.
Taking over the program in the 2015-16 season, Kannemeyer accumulated a record of 46-47 in the PACWEST regular season and had a 4-7 mark in the playoffs. Kannemeyer guided the Blues to a PACWEST silver medal in the 2016-17 season.
“Milt Williams took a chance on me six years ago and I’m forever grateful to him, the athletic department, my assistants and all the players,” said Kannemeyer. “Capilano University will always be close to my heart.”
Under Kannemeyer’s watch, Blues players earned five PACWEST All-Star nods and four more were named to the conference All-Rookie team. In the 2016-17 season, guard Wowie Untalan was named the PACWEST Rookie of the Year and in 2018-19, forward Denver Sparks-Guest was a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian.
“Capilano University and Blues Athletics appreciate Cassidy’s efforts to grow our basketball program, both in terms of improving student-athletes' grade-point averages and the quality of play on the court,” said CapU Manager of Athletics and Recreation Milt Williams. “We wish him well in his future pursuits.”
A Vancouver native, Kannemeyer has been a coach in the Basketball BC program including as head coach of the U15 provincial team. From 2010 to 2015, he was a PACWEST assistant coach at Quest University in Squamish.
The Blues Department of Athletics and Recreation has begun the search for Kannemeyer’s replacement.
