Making his PACWEST debut, Blues goalkeeper Kia Ahmadpour stood tall in the CapU net making 15 saves over two games at Vancouver Island University (VIU), helping the Blues to two ties to open the PACWEST season.
Capilano conceded the first goal in both contests but Ahmadpour's play allowed the visitors to respond in both games. On Sunday, VIU scored within the first minute but it would be the last ball to get past Ahmadpour for the day as he went on to make nine saves including several from point-blank range. It was Ezra Kambidi's first goal in Blues colours late in the first half that ensured the single point.
In Saturday's season opener, VIU held a 1-0 lead at halftime but the Blues scored twice five minutes apart in the second half with Adrian Sahagun converting on a penalty kick and Adam Majuerae scoring his first-ever PACWEST goal to put his team ahead.
Majuerae's goal looked like it might hold up as the winner but VIU was able to equalize late in the game on a scramble in front of Ahmadpour in the Blues net. Vasilis Bagiopoulos had five shots on goal and scored both Mariners goals Saturday.
Next up for the Blues is a road game Saturday, Sept. 17 at Douglas College. The game is a 3:30 p.m. start and will be played at Coquitlam's Town Centre sports complex.
The Blues home opener is the following day, Sunday, Sept. 18, against Langara College in a 3:45 p.m. kickoff. All Blues 2022 home games will be played at Mulgrave School (2330 Cypress Bowl Lane, West Vancouver).
