Picking up where she left off in December, Meagan Briggs (interview audio below) led the Capilano Blues (7-1 PACWEST) in scoring both nights, helping her side to a weekend sweep of the visiting Douglas College Royals (5-5 PACWEST).
The Redding, Calif. native dropped 16 points while grabbing six boards and handing out four assists in Saturday's 60-49 victory. This came a night after a career-best 22 points in the Blues first game back after the break.
On Saturday, it took almost three minutes for the Blues to score, but after a Briggs jumper put them ahead near the five-minute mark, they never trailed the rest of the night. Neither team got much done in the second quarter but another dominant frame in the third put CapU in command as they led by 17 going to the fourth.
Ida Jonsson-Ojala scored nine of her 12 points in the second half and had eight rebounds while Camie Ward provided seven points off the bench as she works her way back from an ankle injury that cost her five games in the fall.
Briggs showed great feel for a mid-range jumper throughout the two-game set against Douglas and was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
In Friday's opener, it was Briggs' 22 points that delivered a 74-66 win over Douglas.
CapU was scrambly early on trailed by three after the first quarter.
The visitors dropped 21 on the Blues in the opening quarter, led by 3-of-6 shooting from downtown by Karalee Antoine. The Blues stabilized things in the second quarter, holding the Royals to 10 points while Briggs had six and Alexa Kusel came off the bench to score four of her season-high seven points.
Douglas was gritty in the third, coming back to make things all square at 52 heading to the fourth quarter but Jonsson-Ojala had seven of her 14 on the night in the final frame and helped wrap things up with a big block with 1:20 remaining.
Shooting just 2-of-17 from three-point range on the night prevented them from pulling away.
Briggs had eight points in the fourth and wound up shooting 10-of-15 on the night.
The Blues are on the road the next two weekends, at Camosun Jan. 20 and 21 and at Langara Jan. 27 and 28. Their next home games are Feb. 3 and 4 with Vancouver Island University paying a visit. Game times are 6 p.m. on the Friday and 1 p.m. on the Saturday.
