The Capilano Blues were unable to make it three wins in a row as they dropped a three-sets-to-one result at Columbia Bible College (CBC) Saturday.
With a win in the weekend finale Jan. 28 against College of the Rockies (COTR) and another victory Friday night to open a set at CBC, CapU was looking to make it an official winning streak but the home side would not cooperate.
Despite a career-best 12 kills from Anna Liniewski, CapU was not able to complete the weekend sweep. Faith Sahota started at setter Saturday with Lauren Roworth unable to dress due to injury and she shared the ball around, helping Nnya Mbaoma to 11 kills and Vanesa Gatto to eight.
CBC went early and often to Paige Vandellen and she came through with 16 kills while also scoring six aces to pace the Bearcats.
The first two sets Saturday each went to extra points but after CapU took the second set 26-24, the Bearcats clawed their way to 25 points first in each of the next two sets to earn their second win of the season.
On Friday, Natalie Rourke started at setter and shared duties on the night with Sahota. CBC took the opening set but the Blues rallied to take the next three sets convincingly to finish up the win.
There are four games remaining in the PACWEST regular season for CapU. Currently, the team sits in fifth place in the standings with COTR being the only team they could catch for a playoff spot. One point in the Blues favour here is they have a game in hand on COTR, who finish their schedule with two games at CBC and one at Douglas College.
CapU's final two weekends have them at Douglas Feb. 10 and 11 before coming home against Camosun College Feb. 17 and 18. Capilano would need to win all of these games and have COTR stumble against CBC and Douglas in order to earn a postseason spot.
