Going back to the 2022 PACWEST provincial semifinals, the Camosun Chargers and Capilano Blues have shown repeatedly they are a worthy test for each other.
CapU scored an eight-point win at last year's provincials and earned another single digit victory back in the 2022-23 season opener. The latest installment in the rivalry took place at Camosun's Victoria campus this past weekend with each team coming away with a win.
It was a dominant fourth-quarter that allowed the Chargers to come back and take Saturday afternoon's game that wrapped up the weekend. Camosun outscored Capilano 22-12 in the final frame, getting 12 points from Isaiah Romanow.
CapU led 64-60 after three quarters Saturday but stalled out in the final 10 minutes going 3-for-17 from the floor, including 0-for-7 from three. This was a contrast to what they showed coming out of halftime when Tyrone Asenoguan scored 11 points in the third quarter while fellow starters Josh Dhillon and Shakir Yakubu each drained buckets to keep the Blues in front.
Asenoguan ended up with 27 for the game, his second-highest total this season. Dhillon finished with 13 but was just 1-of-8 from downtown. CJ Campbell had 12 while Zach Klim came off the bench to provide seven points, four boards and two blocks.
In Friday's opener to the weekend, Asenoguan had 25 and was supported by 21 from Campbell, who went 3-for-5 from three-point range.
It was a decisive second quarter Friday that set the Blues up for the win as they erased a five-point Chargers lead from the opening frame. Campbell went for 10 of his points in the second while Russell Curley hit one of his three triples and Ahmad Athman also was good on his one look from downtown.
CapU extended their lead in the third with seven points from Dhillon and another three from Curley. Klim contributed five and seven off the bench while Marko Cosic chipped in with three steals and four assists in a reserve role.
Next up for the Blues is a pair of away games Jan. 27 and 28 at Langara College. Game time is 8 p.m. both days at Langara's Vancouver campus.
