Another weekend saw another split decision for the Capilano Blues.
The men's hoops squad has traded wins and losses with each of their opponents the last three weekends. The latest results saw CapU drop a Friday opener 100-78 at Langara but they rescued their weekend with a 97-91 win the next night.
A sleepy start cost the Blues Friday as they were outscored 34-14 in the first 10 minutes with Falcons guard Royce Clayton torching them for 17. CapU made some gains in the third quarter as Tyrone Asenoguan scored 14 of his 27 but they ran out of gas in the fourth, scoring just 11. Clayton finished the night with 34, the most an opponent has hung on the Blues this season.
On Saturday, David Featherston Jr. put his stamp on the proceedings for Capilano as he continues to adjust to Canadian college hoops coming from the U.S. junior college ranks. The Arizona native scored a season-high 21 Saturday, including nine in fourth-quarter crunch time, and pulled down six rebounds to help the Blues erase a 10-point Langara lead.
Asenoguan had 12 over the final 10 minutes while Ahmad Athman gave Langara fits on defence, swiping three steals in the fourth quarter.
Josh Dhillon, who struggled shooting the ball Friday, was more himself in Saturday's win with 18 point and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Zach Klim gave CapU a productive 16 minutes off the bench with seven points and nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
The weekend split puts Capilano at 7-5 in the PACWEST standings, tied for second spot with Camosun and Douglas though Douglas has played 14 games to CapU's 12.
Coming up on the PACWEST schedule is a visit from the Vancouver Island University Mariners, who are the No. 1-ranked team in the nation and carry a 12-0 record in PACWEST play. Game times are 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
