Waiting until the last possible moment to show their best of the weekend, the Capilano Blues men's volleyball side pulled off an impressive comeback to split their weekend at Douglas College.
CapU had dropped five-straight sets at Douglas after a straight-sets defeat Friday and going down 2-0 Saturday. In the third set, the Blues attack began to click and they offered much more resistance at the net compared to the night before.
Stephen Searcy rattled off 14 kills Saturday while Jesse Lee posted 10, the only player to reach double digits both games on the weekend. Colby Soolsma was held to just five kills Saturday but contributed from other parts of the floor with three solo blocks and three aces.
Jenson Yuen picked up 37 assists with James Fong (seven kills) and Jakob Leinemann (five kills) getting involved in the attack.
Friday's result was a disappointment for Capilano and besides Lee and his 10 kills, there really wasn't much else to describe about the Blues game. The team managed just three aces and three blocks.
The Blues let themselves down at the service line as they committed 28 errors there to just 14 for Douglas.
Despite the win Saturday, CapU's record now sits at 5-13 which puts them in fifth place in the PACWEST standings without enough games left to move up and catch Vancouver Island University (9-9) for the final playoff berth.
The PACWEST regular season schedule concludes at home for the Blues next weekend with the CCAA's No. 1-ranked team, Camosun College, paying a visit to CapU's Centre for Sport and Wellness. Game times are 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.
The final game will be Blues Seniors Night with graduating players Jenson Yuen and James Fong being honoured.
