If there had been a trend emerging through the first two weekends of PACWEST volleyball for the Capilano Blues, it was strong starts that faded over the course of the match.
The Blues took opening sets off each of Douglas College and Vancouver Island University in Weeks 1 and 2 of the season before eventually falling to both opponents.
CapU traveled to face the nationally No. 8-ranked Camosun College Chargers this past weekend and for the first time this season won a set that was not the opener, perhaps showing to themselves they can compete deeper into matches.
Ultimately the results were the same for the Blues, who are themselves ranked No. 15 nationally as of the last listing, as they dropped the weekend set to Camosun by scores of 3-1 and 3-0.
The Chargers narrowly won the first two sets Friday before the Blues scored a third-set win by a count of 25-23. The home side ended the night in the fourth set, 25-21.
Nnya Mbaoma led the way on offence with seven kills while Sibby Bos (interview audio below) chalked up three aces. Ashley LeSage was big at the net with two blocks while recording two aces of her own.
In Saturday’s rematch, the first set proved to be the Blues best as they forced Camosun to extra points before conceding it 27-25. The Chargers took the second and third set by identical 25-19 scores.
Bos, Mbaoma and Annika Kuznik had four kills apiece while LeSage racked up three more aces.
Next up for Capilano is a road trip to the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, B.C. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Blues next home game are Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26 as Columbia Bible College comes to CapU. Games start at 6 p.m. both nights.
